25 Photographers Who Clearly Think That The End Justifies The Means

How far would you go for the perfect shot? These folk right here already know the answer: as far as it takes, and then more. These photography daredevils show a remarkable degree of dedication to the craft. The simplest thing is to lay down on the ground – you might look silly for a few seconds, but, hey, the angle is worth it.

And then we get to things like stalking Hawaiian lava fields at night. Actual lava fields that take several lives each year. Or climbing icy mountains to snap pictures of your climbing guide scaling vertical ice walls. Or joining treks in Sahara to photograph the people who take part in such events. These examples are all taken from true accounts given by daring photographers.

But what about risking your life without moving further than 200 meter from a shower and a coffee shot? Well, then urban climbing has you covered in spades. Any tall structure will do, but skyscrapers and towers – both actual and radio – seem to be favored by people who risk tight concrete hugs to take mind-bending pictures. It also works if you’re the rebellious sort – many of such stunt probably bend a law or two, so you’re challenging the laws of both society and physics.

But hey, it’s all worth it in the end, isn’t it?

Today I am introducing a photographer who has a really interesting background in photography, and has taken some great photographs through his personal projects, and as a part of his job. Today’s photographer is Josef Koudelka.

I first found out about Josef Koudelka and his photography through the book Magnum Magnum, where he is introduced along with six of his photographs. I also came across his work in the book Magnum Contact Sheets, which came into my possession in the last few weeks, and I had the chance to look over his negatives from some of his most famous work from the Prague invasion.

Josef started taking photographs of stage productions where he lived, making some money on the side from his engineering job. Some of these photos appeared in the book Magnum Magnum. Later on, he worked on more personal projects, one particularly famous one was of gypsies living in Romania.
Josef Koudelka’s photographs were viewed by the world when he witnessed the invasion of Prague, and started documenting the things going on during that time. Secretly, he sent his film out of the country, to the Magnum photo agency, who published his images under the name P.P. (meaning Prague Photographer). He didn’t use his real name incase there were repercussions on his family and friends. It only later became publicly known that he was the man behind these photographs.

A few years later Josef was able to leave his country, and it was at that time that he became a member of the Magnum photo agency, and later went on to win many photography awards and publish several books.

 The Gallipoli Catastrophe Documentary 

The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign or the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savaşı), took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey) in the Ottoman Empire between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916, during World War I. Aiming to secure a sea route to Russia, the British and French launched a naval campaign to force a passage through the Dardanelles. After the naval operation, an amphibious landing was undertaken on the Gallipoli peninsula, to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul).[6] After eight months the land campaign also failed with many casualties on both sides, and the invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt.

The campaign was one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the war and is considered a major failure of the Allies. In Turkey, it is perceived as a defining moment in the nation's history—a final surge in the defence of the motherland as the Ottoman Empire crumbled. The struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War of Independence and the founding of the Republic of Turkey eight years later under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a commander at Gallipoli. The campaign is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in Australia and New Zealand and the date of the landing 25 April, is known as "Anzac Day". It remains the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans there, surpassing Remembrance Day (Armistice Day).

Armin Theophil Wegner and Armenian Genocide

Armin Theophil Wegner (October 16, 1886 – May 17, 1978) was a German soldier and medic in World War I, a prolific author, and a human rights activist.[1] 

Stationed in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Wegner was a witness to the Armenian Genocide and the photographs he took documenting the plight of the Armenians today "comprises the core of witness images of the Genocide."
