The National
Geographic Traveler Magazine photo contest, now in its 25th year, has
begun. There is still plenty of time to enter. The entry deadline is
Sunday, June 30, at 11:59 p.m. Entrants
may submit their photographs in any or all of the four categories:
Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place and Spontaneous
Moments. The magazine's photo editors showcase their favorite entries each week in galleries. You can also vote for your favorites. "The pictures increasingly reflect a more
sophisticated way of seeing and interpreting the world, making the
judging process more difficult," says Keith Bellows, magazine editor in
chief.

OF PLACE - Sense of Metal - I want to take photos of heating elements.
When I entered the factory, I saw the metal sheets and I formed a
picture. I wanted a lifting crane to take the best photo. I directed the
man who wore an orange t-shirt and counted the heater elements and I
took the photo of his job. Bolu, Turkey. (Melih Sular/National

SCENES - Beeseeching - The fog had thickened to a point where the
distant mountains had almost vanished. I turned my attention to
something a bit closer and as I stood looking at the tree it occurred to
me that the branches seemed to be held out in a gesture that seemed to
be imploring something, or someone to pay attention...maybe it was me!

SCENES - Dead Vlei Scene - We were supposed to be there right at
sunrise, but got a little lost. It was still a gorgeous landscape.
Everywhere you looked was incredibly beautiful. Dead Vlei is a bleached

like sculptures against the surreal backdrop. Dead Vlei, Namibia. (Sara

SCENES - Blue Pond, The Snowstorm in May - In Hokkaido, it was an
uncommon thing but it snowed in May of this year. A lot of tourists
dislike snow in the spring. This place has a view drawing tourists from

SCENES - Abandoned Piers of Eastie -This spring sunset was really
dramatic as the cold front came through Boston on April Fool's Day. The
sky was clearing to the west and the sun made a last-minute appearance,
illuminating the underside of the thick cloud layer with hot pink color,
and casting the most beautiful, warm light on the west-facing facades
of Boston's downtown skyscrapers. East Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

OF PLACE - How Great is our God - As our mission group was singing "How
great is our God" at one of the poorest cities in the world, I turned
around and saw this man. This was his reaction to our singing and
services that day. I'm still speechless, this moment of my life brought
tears to my eyes. Delivering free water to the villages in Cite Soleil,

MOMENTS - Friends for Life - While traveling in the Gobi Desert of
North West China, a place vibrant in culture and full of unforgettable
experiences, I turned to look down this street to catch this moment on
film. This image to me, speaks of friendship. No matter how rugged the
terrain, or war torn, forbidding a place may be, human love will
prevail... Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. (John

PORTRAITS - Suri Smile - It took a three-day drive in rugged conditions
to meet the Suri tribe. The community is nestled in one of the toughest
and most remote places on Earth - the Ethiopia/Sudan border. Despite
the harsh conditions, the Suri take great pride and joy in decorating
their bodies. This young Suri boy is covered in yellow and red ochre
from a creek bed near our camp. These marks of distinction are used to
attract women and to intimidate enemies in battle. Suri apply the paint

PORTRAITS - Street life -I saw this old lady, crouching down a narrow
side street on the outskirts of the volcanic mountain town of Antigua,
Guatemala. Her bright blue shawl caught my eye but it wasn't till I
approached her I saw how beautiful her face was. Looking at her, I just
wanted to know all the stories that old face had seen…and had to
tell... Near Antigua, Guatemala. (Ben Moore/National Geographic Traveler

OF PLACE - Sperare: Hope - This picture is not a photo of a painting or
landscape. It is colored threads/wool hanging from the wall in an
amazing way with a nail head coming out in between. I tried to create a
feeling of moon and sea. Name is hope because this is what I have
learned after taking this picture. I saw the results and I was very
happy because after lot of hard work to visualize a shot, it finally
paid off. Green color in Italy also means hope. Stockholm. (Aditya
